Christmas Lighting Statistics: Save With LED Lights

With Christmas coming, many people are already thinking about Christmas lights. As an LED lighting supplier, we often see a big increase in sales of our LED Strip Lights for Christmas decorations.

With Christmas lights becoming such a huge industry, we wanted to research and share some interesting statistics about Christmas lighting – particularly their cost. For example, the value of Christmas lights and decorations is forecast to rise to over nine billion dollars by 2026.  The value of the global Christmas decorations and lights market was estimated to be worth 6.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2021. This figure was forecast to rise to over nine billion dollars by 2026.

With rising energy costs and growing environmental concerns, more and more people are considering how they can save on their electricity bills while still joining in with Christmas lighting.

We hope you find some of these stats interesting, and we’ve included some expert tips to save money on your Christmas lighting at the end.

How Much Do Christmas Lights Really Cost?

Despite fears about energy bills, the actual cost of running LED Christmas lights is relatively low for the average British home. Research reveals that lighting your home with a mix of indoor and outdoor Christmas decorations for 6 hours a day only costs around £1.34 for a month.

This covers decorations such as fairy lights, reindeer figures, and more. Even for regions with higher electricity costs, like London or the South East, the total energy expenditure is only slightly higher at £1.39.

For comparison, leaving your television on standby throughout December would cost roughly £2.03, which is more expensive than running Christmas lights for the same period.

Energy Savings with LED Christmas Lights

A major factor driving down the cost of Christmas lighting is the use of LED lights, which consume 75-90% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. Switching to LED lights can significantly lower your electricity bill while still providing beautiful, bright displays. For instance, a 20-meter strand of LED cluster lights costs less than £1 per month when used for six hours a day throughout December.

Here’s a breakdown from Statista – showing the cost of lighting a Christmas tree using Incandescent vs LED Lights. As you can see, the difference is staggering!

LED lights costs just $0.06 to run 280 lights, vs $27.21 to run 125 standard incandescent Christmas lights for the same time period.

Additionally, LED lights last much longer than traditional bulbs, reducing the need for frequent replacements and further increasing long-term savings. They are also better for the environment, as their energy efficiency reduces greenhouse gas emissions.

Changing Consumer Habits in the UK

Despite the low cost of running Christmas lights, many UK households are scaling back their festive displays due to financial pressures. A recent survey showed that 18% of households are choosing not to put up Christmas lights this year, while 23% are opting for fewer lights compared to previous years. However, for those who continue to use Christmas lights, there is a growing trend towards energy-efficient options such as LED or solar-powered lights.

Tips for Reducing Energy Costs

Even with the low running costs of LED lights, there are additional ways to save on energy this Christmas:

1. Timers: Using timers to automatically switch off lights during late-night hours can prevent unnecessary energy use.

2. Smart Lighting: Smart lights offer greater control, allowing users to set schedules and adjust brightness, further reducing energy consumption.

3. Solar-Powered Lights: For outdoor displays, solar-powered lights can offer an eco-friendly, cost-free solution. While we don’t get much sunshine in the UK winter, even a cloudy day can still provide ample solar power to run LED lights.

Save With LED Lights At Christmas

As Christmas draws closer, we hope you’ll be encouraged at the low cost of running LED lights to keep your home bright and decorative this winter! Especially with LED lights lasting for years without maintenance, running LED lights throughout the winter won’t break the bank – while adding plenty of festive cheer to family and friends.
